As the owner of a business, most likely you are focused on the day to day operations and growth of that business, not on sales taxes. But as your business expands its operations, other states (or Colorado cities) may determine that you are "doing business," there, or what’s called establishing Nexus, even though you don’t have an office, property or employees located there. However, if you are audited and found to have Nexus somewhere for which you have not been collecting sales taxes, you can end up with a tax bill of tens, or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Q. OK, what can you do?
A. I can do what’s called a Nexus Review, in which I review your operations to determine if there are places where it makes business sense to collect taxes from your customers, and file returns to remit those taxes to the states (and maybe cities). Please contact me for more details.
Q. What if I should have been filing in the past?
A. If it appears that you should have been filing somewhere in the past, many tax jurisidctions allow you to file what’s called a Voluntary Disclosure Agreement (which can initially be filed anonymously) in which you tell them of your mistake, pay back taxes with interest for a certain period, and in return they most often reduce or eliminate penalties. Q. Can you help me prepare for an audit before I have one?
A. Absolutely. I would prefer to do that – it will most likely save you money in the long run. Please contact me for more details.
Q. Is there anything else I should know right now?
A. I might be able to obtain refunds of sales taxes that you have overpaid in the past on purchases of materials and supplies, due to exemptions, incorrect tax rates charged by suppliers and other reasons. I can perform what’s called a Reverse Audit, which is done on a contingency fee basis. Contact me for additional details.
